United World Colleges – Education for One World

The United World Colleges (UWC) see themselves as an international educational movement. Their goal: connecting people, nations and cultures and creating a peaceful and sustainable future. In 2017, the One World Award – established by foundation initiator, Joseph Wilhelm in 2008 - honoured the education movement with the OWA Grand Prix.

“UWC understands education as a force that connects people, nations and cultures and creates a peaceful, sustainable future.” This is the mission statement of the 18 United World Colleges on four continents, where young people from 120 countries are educated.

In 2017, the United World Colleges in Freiburg/Germany and in Pune/India received the Grand Prix of the One World Award on behalf of the worldwide movement. The prize, established by foundation initiator, Joseph Wilhelm, in 2008 and which has since been awarded six times, distinguishes people who encourage others and help turn positive globalisation into reality.

The students at the UWC in Freiburg enjoy learning according to a learning plan that is based on sustainability aspects. In the former Carthusian monastery dating back to 1345, they rebuilt the former monastery garden through voluntary work. The so-called CAS project activities, which are carried out outside the university, support local community projects on site. Many of these projects are linked to ecology and sustainability.

Our support

The UWC in Pune attaches great importance to the careful use of resources - energy is generated from the sun and wind. Water-saving measures, waste separation and soil conservation have a high priority. A lot of creativity goes into improving the institution's carbon footprint. Waste water is treated in a biological waste water treatment plant and virtually transformed into drinking water quality. There is also an organic garden on campus, which cooperates with a local farmers' association. The ecological highlight, however, is a biodiversity and nature conservation park that takes up a third of the entire campus area.
